Do police departments pay Auto insurance???? |
Since they speed and can bump people with their cars..and dangerous things like that...shouldnt it be high? And how much? They do opposite. Ripping off money from people not auto insureance in the way that regular people get. The police department has to be bonded. it is an insurance on its employees and its equipment. it is a encompassing insurance. when i worked at the sheriff's department i was bonded for 4 million dollars. that took care of lawsuits that were brought against me. the department itself carries insurance to cover the department itself. It is very expensive insurance and is paid by the taxpayers ultimatley. They may self-insure. yes..through a state pool or self insured for the bigger cities There are specialized companies that sell special policies designed for any fleet use (companies operating multiple vehicles). Government agencies always have certain insurance companies they use. For example I'm on a Volunteer Search & Rescue team that operates 2 ambulances (for BLS Transport & rescues), along with 2 boats for water rescues. We go through VFIS (Vounteer Fireman Insurance Services) which offer insurance primarily vol. fire departments. All of our vehicles have full coverage with no deductibles, actual repair or replacement value (if its totalled they will pay the cost to obtain a new equivlent vehicle, not the reduced blue book of the vehicle totaled like insurance companies always pay), so an example is our 1990 Ford E-350 type III ambulance with 400,000 miles is covered for $100,000. We pay total of $6,000 a year on insurance, that is for all vehicles, covers all members, include our workmans comp insurance & all. Police Depts have policies similiar to this through specialized insurance companies, such as VFIS. This is how they can afford the insurance even though there vehicles are always getting damaged. The insurance policy would cover the entire department, their station, vehicles, equipment, employees & all. In other words they are insured & bonded. Which protects the department & the city from paying big dollars in a law suit, as their insurance would pay. The vehicle, property, employee insurance is all enrolled in to one simple policy, which can be in cost of $1000-100,000 a year depending upon the policy & coverages needed. Commander of Search & Rescue Team, know many police officers, and also worked for 4 security companies that operated patrol vehicles. The city I live in pay $20,000 a year on insurance, which covers everything, and they have an overall umbrella coverage of one million dollars. Usually Governments self insure for property but they often take commercial covers for personal injury and technical and scientific property. This is usually to get access to professional loss estimation and to be able to cap liability at some figure. Smaller governments may also take catastrophe covers |
