Why swiss bank account more popular?

Switzerland allows their bank accounts to be numbered - you are identified by the account number and not your name. This means a few things...

If you are Kim Jong Il and have $20 million in two accounts, one in Switzerland, one outside of Switzerland - when the US tries to freeze your accounts / take your money -- they can point to a bank account with his name on it, and tell the bank / that country to freeze the account.
In a swiss account, you would not be able to identify the owner of the account (easily).

Or, if you are Joe Insider Trader, you can instruct your Swiss account to buy and sell on insider tips. If the SEC catches wind of this, they again, are pointed to an account that is numbered, not directly tied to your name.

So, the Swiss are very reluctant to ever break from their privacy rules.

People who are not swiss, and are not involved in any illicit actions, don't really have a need for a swiss account

Swiss bank are more popular because they are very confidential, they do not share any info with anyone even not with their own government.

This a reason that many Holocaust survival had to fight 50 years to get info about the money that their family had in their bank and it did take another 10 years until the money was released.
