Can I add someone to my checking account if they owe money on their account at the same bank?

Okay. I know this could be a bad idea. I am considering adding my sister to my bank account temporarily. My account is in good standing. Hers isn't, and any money she deposits will be eaten up in back money owed. We have the same bank and she needs a way to deposit her checks. She is an indepedent contractor so most of her checks are for smaller amounts 50-100 each and she has multiple ones so a check cashing place w/ its fees isn't really feasible.

Basically will the bank let me add her even though her account is in the pits?

Yes, they will let you add her and the accounts will remain independent as far as the balance is concerned.

The bank will let you add her and then they will take your money and her money. If she writes additional bad checks, they will come after YOUR money then as well. If you know it is a bad idea, why are you doing it? If she owes the bank money, she ought to pay it and the bank is fully within its rights to require it. Besides the obvious solution of paying what she owes, your sister might want to try to find another bank.
not good!! why doesn't she just open a new acct. at another bank, sounds a lot simpler to me, and save you some headache's & worry.

Why doesn't she just pay the bank what she owes them and then she can use her own account?
Yes, you can have a joint account with her. Just take her down to the bank with you.
I would strongly recommend thinking more about this first, don't be a pushover just because she's your sister. She will have access to the money you have in the account, and YOU will be responsible if she leaves the account overdrawn. If you are unable to put the account back in good standing within the time frame the bank decides, the bank will report you to ChexSystems. Once you have been reported to ChexSystems, no major bank will give you an account, until you've been purged from their records (7 years).
Can't she just get a paypal account, and have her customers pay her that way?
NO!! STOP!!! Do not add her!! I have been a banker for quite a while and these situations always end up with someone in tears in my office. The day that you add her, the bank will take what she owes from your account to make her account right again.
If the bank has not already reported her bad banking activity she can probably open an account at another bank. Good luck, but don't financially tie yourself to her in any way.
