| *Loan,banking and credit>>>bank account |
About 60 years ago my mother opened a $7 saving account in my name at the Jamaica Saving Bank in Queens, NY.? |
Since then the account has been inactive because we moved away. The pass book was lost when my mother died. With proper identification, can I still collect the money plus interest? In some (maybe most?) states, if an account is inactive for more than a certain period of time (I think usually something like 2 years or 5 years), the money gets turned over to the state. Here's a link that you might find helpful: http://www.banking.state.ny.us/faq.htm... I think the section on escheatment is what would apply in this case and there's information about who to contact in New York about it. From looking at that website - and this page particularly: http://www.osc.state.ny.us/ouf/faq.htm#f... - it looks like you might be able to get the money back if you can provide proper documentation that it belongs to you. I thought there was a time limit, but this page says that there isn't. If she opened the account in your name, she would have needed your social security number, along with hers. You will probably need both numbers and her death certificate. It is possible. If the account is in your name and you are over 18 (which I imagine you are) you shouldn't need her information to access is, just your own. You will probably need your DL or ID you SS# and the address you laived at when the account was open. You can close out an account that belongs to people with only one of the two being there...however... Many banks have fees that are charged for keepinga savings account under $100. So it is entirely possible that your account wnet deliquent due to these types of charges and was closed by the bank... good luck States have info on unclaimed money Here is the one for New york. http://www.osc.state.ny.us/ouf/index.htm... Just type in your name and it will tell you if was reported. I checked in my state and found out I had lost money. If you do have money, the process is easy and can be done through the mail. |
