I have some bank details here and need to know what name the account is in. Anyone know about this?


My money has been going into someone elses account. I have the account number and sort code. I want to know if it's somebody i know or if it's the company's **** up that the money comes from. I found out what branch it is but dont know how to get more info It's quite worrying that someone may be using my I.D Any ideas?

Firstly contact whoever is paying you and get further payments stopped for the wrong account. Do they have someone else's Account name, other than yours? If not, the recipient bank is somewhat negligent for not making appropriate checks.

I would suggest that you contact the bank branch and explain the situation in writing, preferably with a covering letter from the person/organisation that has made the past payments.

The branch is likely to contact the person who holds the account and may 'freeze' some money until it's sorted: the better the evidence that you provide to them, the better.

Then work out who made the mistake - you, the people who were trying to pay you or some other factor or person. Nothing sorts things out better than when someone holds responsibility. It won't preferably be you?

It is unrealistic to expect a bank to pass confidential customer info onto anyone else, except the police etc. The recipient of the money will probably be relieved that the mistake can be rectified-they could be very stressed about - or even ignorant of the mistake! Tons of people pay little attention when it comes to checking bank statements etc.

With a bit of luck, it will have stopped them paying outrageous overdraft charges, if they've been short of cash.

If there has been fraud then the police would be best brought in too.
