How long do banks keep records of a negative closed account? |
I had a checking account with Bank of america and i had an enormous negative balance, then they closed it. Am I still bad through the check system? Its been over 5 years now Yeah, not only will it stay in that bad check system, but they normally file with a collections agency and it is most likely on your credit report. That will follow you for up to 10 years. You need to look into it. Get you free credit report and see.. https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/i... It takes seven years to be deleted from Chexsystems. You can request that the bank remove you. It is completely up to them though. If you paid back your debt then they shouldn't mind. If you didn't then you are at their mercy. Hopefully you learned your lesson. I do collections at a bank on people like this. When dealing with my husbands stuff when we first got together we found out that it take 5 years for CheckSystems to clear. But, that was with a bad account that was paid to $0 by us (even though the bad account was due to stolen checks on an account that was closed 1 1/2 years prior to the stolen checks being writen - Thanks WaMu for nothing!) 5 to 7 years. They are only required to keep them for 3 years. |
