Cashing U.S. savings bonds at banks, do u need an account? |
i have series EE I don't see why you would. Bond money is federally insured. You might need 2 pieces of ID, and some may charge you a small fee though. never tried at a bank i didn't have an acct. at No. Just proof of identity. You should be able to cash them at any bank. You shouldn't, though my bank not too long ago told me that they would only change up to a certain amount of rolled coins for people without accounts, so you never know. Any bank should cash them for you as they are backed by the U.S. government. The bank can, however, charge a fee if you do not have an account...they shouldn't; but, it is up to their individual policies. You will have to provide I.D. (possibly two forms at least one with a photo) in order to cash them. If you are in doubt, just call a few of your local banks and ask them their policy on cashing savings bonds so that you know before you head out. Remember also that unless the bond is mature you will not get the full face value of it. former banker and savings bond casher |
