What do I have to do with my Bank account if I move to another state? Can I just transfer to a diffrent bank?

I want to move to Florida but I need an easy way to move my money along with me.. I am in a Credit Union right now. Also how do I transfer Car Loans?

First make sure all your checks have cleared. In most cases, you cannot just write a check to close the account....that would just leave you with a zero balance and the account would remain open and possibly assess fees for being below a minimum balance. You will have to go to the bank to sign a closing form and get a bank (cashier's) check. If you already have an account set up in Florida, you could also wire the money there. Of course there would be a fee for this for the outgoing wire and another fee at the new bank for the incoming wire. If you can't get to the bank to close the account, you can always write them a letter requesting they close the account and let them know your forwarding address and where to send you your money. Make sure to sign the letter as the bank will need to verify your signature since you're not there in person to show identification.

As for transfering your car loan.... if the new bank has a better rate, you just apply for the loan with them and they will pay off the old bank with the loan proceeds. If you keep loan with the old bank and the money was previously automatically taken from your account, you may need to request a monthly payment booklet and mail in your checks each month. Not all banks have the ability to take money from another bank to satisfy a loan payment (this is known as ACH). Source(s): Work in the banking industry for over 10 years
Why not just keep the bank you currently have? We have been in the military for 12 years and have lived in three different states and two different countries and have just kept our same account... just get a local account when you get there and keep your current account as your primary, it's really very simple in this day and age of automatic drafts/deposits, debit cards and on-line banking...
Unless your current bank has a branch in FL, you'll have to close your account and open a new one... Is there a reason you want to tansfer your car loan? I had a car loan through a credit union in Boston, which I kept until it was paid off even though I lived in 4 different states during that time.
Once you are sure that all outstanding checks and charges have cleared your account, call your bank and tell them that you would like to close the account.

Have them send your funds to you in the form of a certified check. Take the check to your new bank and open a new bank account!

If you have enjoyed your experience with your local credit union, see if they have "partners" or "associate credit unions" in your new state that they could recommend to you.

Good luck with the move!
My only advice, if you do open a new bank account, don't go with Bank of America. I hate those insolent, contemptuous bastards. They treat their customers just like a number -- no personal attention, zero respect.
