Can a minor open her own bank account wihtout a parent or guardian's consent? |
I already have a savings account, but it's under my mom's name, so whenever she needs some extra money she transfers it from mine to hers. I understand this is more of a personal problem, but my new job (of two months) only does direct deposit, I HAD earned $700, but when I checked my account this afternoon it was down to nothing. So, is there any way a 16 year old can have a secure bank account that no parent or guardian can access? No...most banks do not allow minors to have a bank account on their own...for the reason that minors are not allowed to enter into a legal contract. You should either find another adult to be on the account instead of your mother (which would require closing the account and opening a new one)...or go to your work and tell them they are no longer allowed to direct deposit into your account. Most employers are telling employees they MUST direct deposit...this is not true, they cannot force you to direct deposit your money. It is your money you have earned it and you can recieve it in a paper check if you like. You still have the problem at that point that you have no where to put the money that you got in your check, but it stops the immediate problem of your mom taking your money. Source(s): Bank Teller No , with help parental guide http://www.freewebs.com/get-any-loan/... Yes. Go to any bank and open one. You've learned a lesson about putting things in other people's names. You don't need a new bank account, you need a new mom! Yikes and double yikes. It's one thing to contribute to the family, but not if it's involuntary. I believe what you have here is stealing. Many child stars sue their parents for what your mom is doing. It's their job to take care of you until you're 18 and any money you make should either go for a reasonable amount of personal items with the rest going directly into an untouchable savings account until your 18th or perhaps 25th birthday. This is the value of your hard labor she is taking from you. I tried to find out if you can open an account online, but they ask for someone to be over 18. I don't know if they would actually check if you changed your birth date though they ask for SS# and either DL or state ID. Try http://home.ingdirect.com/ They operate solely online and don't charge any fees. I just talked to Bank Of America and they said you can open your own account at a local branch of the bank. So I'd say go down and give it a try at whatever bank you're comfortable with. no |
