Does internet and telephone banking make the distinction between savings and checking accounts obsolete?


I can instantly transfer funds from one to the other.

I do that too, and I love it! we don't have to deal anymore with tellers, but many ppl don't trust on line banking...so it will never disappear all together
No, because another difference is that a savings account can accrue interest. Many people still use their savings account as a savings and not just a place to put their money until their checking account is empty again...
