How old do you have to be to cash a check in a bank? |
Okay, so i got my first job and my first paycheck. I'm not old enough to have a bank account but can I still get my money without my parents? If it is drawn on a local bank, take it to their bank to cash it. As far as I know, Bank of America is the only one that charges a fee to cash their own checks at their own banks. If you do not have an account at a bank and if the bank the check is drawn on is not a local bank, you have two options: Have your parents cash it against their account. or My kids have had bank accounts since they were 4, so you are old enough. You just need someone to co-sign on the account with you. Even if you open a savings account instead of a checking account, you'll still be able to cash checks there. A bank won't generally cash your check unless you have an account there. Sometimes they don't care, if it's only a very small amount of money, but there is no age limit on this. You should consider opening a checking account with your dad/mom as a cosigner. This way it doesn't really matter how old you are. You can have a bank account, your parents have to sign to open it, but after that they don't need to sign your checks. Open a student checking/savings with your Mom and/or Dad. You will then be able to deposit, withdrawal money from your account and cash your check without them present. Some banks can set up the account to where two people must be present at withdrawing money out of a savings acct, this would be good if you were trying to save for something in particular. If you just want to be able to cash your check, then either account would suffice. Worked at a bank for 7 years Really what you need is an ID. If you are to young you may not have a legit ID for them such as a drivers lisence or a military ID. If you have a passport that could work. It really doesnt matter they will take a thumb print so they have a valid ID of you in case there are any problems after the process. Oh and the check has to be from the one that you are cashing it in. If you go to a back without the check coming from there they will not cash it unless you open an account. personal experience cashing checks at other banks |
