Can a bank force you to refinance a car loan to change your last name (due to marriage)? |
My then fiance and I co-signed for a car a few months ago. Now that we are married and she has taken my last name, she wants to change her name on the loan. The bank told her today she may have to refinance (at a prevailing higher rate) to get her name changed. This seems illegal. We are waiting to hear back on Monday from someone else, but does anyone have any insight or suggestions assuming they take the same stance on Monday? We live and bought the car in Georgia. Thanks! Provide them with a social security card w/ your married name and a copy of your marriage license and they have to change your name. If they refuse to change your name, tell them you are contacting your attorney to handle. Do not refinance. This is a scam to get you hooked. no its a free country and it was you given name just cause you married doesnt mean they can make you change yor last name if you dont want to. THat sounds like BULLSHYT! I wouldnt do it. If they cant change it, then dont no way would I pay more money to change the name. Put your marriage license in the glove box and call it a day. Changing the name on that would cost you about 500 bucks or more (depending on your current rate and the new one) I wouldnt even THINK of doing it and I would also tell this company this policy SUCKS and I would NEVER buy another car from them again! sounds iffy to me i didn't have to refinance when i changed my name due to marriage. i would look for a new bank and try to refinance at a lower rate with a different bank (only if they are wiling to give you a lower rate) I don't think that's right. Usually for a name change the most I've had to provide is a copy of my marriage license. Otherwise, it won't hurt if the loans stays in her old name. I had a few loans I never changed over when I got married. |
