What is the best way to accept credit cards in an online store for a small business?

Should I integrate directly with Visa and Mastercard? Is this expensive? Or should I just use PayPal? Will people get annoyed and leave if they have to go through PayPal to purchase an item?

PayPal is really easy to integrate, and so many people are familiar with it, already have an account, and trust it. Don't forget to add your website into PayPal Shops (go to PayPal, click the Shops link at the bottom). It's a great way for people looking to pay for something with PayPal to find you. The downside of PayPal is that the cut PayPal takes can feel fairly substantial, especially on credit cards.

Google Checkout is new, and they aren't taking any percentage on sales until 2008, and even then their rate is going to be less than PayPal's. Find them at http://checkout.google.com/
I have processed about 6 transactions so far with no problem. My clients have had good things to say about it too. They tell me it was quick and easy.

I'm sure you're also taking into account what type of business you have. If you sell an extremely high-end product, you might want to go with a different kind of credit card processor, and a type that will allow you to accept payments over the phone. I've used http://www.propay.com in the past, and it was convenient and easy to work with (but a little too expensive for my needs)...it might be right for you though.

All in all, I think it's best to allow customers several different ways to pay. You can use several methods (you can accept both Google Checkout and PayPal for example, it's not against their Terms Of Use)

Hope this helps!
paypal is relatively inexpensive and pretty good to use; i've been using it for a while on my website, and no one seems to complain
I use PayPal for my online businesses. It's much cheaper than the other options and much less trouble (I've used the others).

People do not get annoyed at all. They can use any credit card through PayPal without being a member.

Choosing a payment processing company can be overwhelming. There are ups and downs to going with paypal. If you are going to have any kind of volume at all, probably not a good fit. Their rates are little more expensive than outside Merchant Services providers.

It is very important to be on the right program.

If you need a shopping cart for a website, there is a great option if you a re building the website yourself. If you just need the ability to key in credit cards online, then we are talking about a completely different set up.

In either ecommerce scenario expect to pay more for card not present transactions here. It would be best if your average sale amount was much higher on the ecommerce side of your business. The rates will be about 2.2% & $0.25 per transaction.

The company below can assist you with setting up both of those accounts to help you maximize your profits:
