I own a small business. How can I benifit from leasing an auto instead of purchasing in terms of tax writeoff? Here is the main difference between leasing and purchasing. If you purchase a car for business use, you have to depreciate the vehicle over 5 years. However, since automobiles are considered "listed property", there is a statutory maximum depreciations that you can claim, which may result in your depreciation being over a longer term than 5 years, depending on the purchase price of the car. Also, if the car is used by you for both business and personal use (you don't have a second car for personal use only), then your depreciation is further reduced based on the business use portion only. When you lease a vehicle, the entire lease payment is a deductible business expense. There is also a personal use apportionment as well, and even if you claim 100% business use, the IRS does have a statutory amount that you would need to include as imputed income. However, this statutory amount is very small in comparison to lease payments and it is based on the fair market value of the vehicle. I've always told my tax clients that it is more beneficial for tax purposes to lease a vehicle versus owning one. I am not 100% certain, but I can provide a little knowledge. They are both expenses to your business over a period of time as long as you finance it. If you purchase it outright, you might only be able to write it off one year, depending on your accounting system. Leasing for a business can be great. You won't have to worry about major engine repairs, just normal maintenance. They also often better lease deals then purchase deals at a dealership due to the possibility of repeat business in a shorter amount of time. |
