Do you have to pay sales tax when buying a used car privately?

In some states, yes. The motor vehicle department has a bill of sale form, and they calculate the sales tax from the selling price of the vehicle.
Not in AZ :)

You have to pay when you pay to have the title switched but don't tell any one the person can always put a less amount on the title so you pay less taxes
