Does any1 know the legalities for bringing a british car to donegal i.e rd tax ,mot, insurance ect? Try the revenue site www.revenue.ie and if you click on the VRT link you can enter the details for your car and it will tell you the import duty for your car (which is roughly 30% of the cars market value in Ireland). To register a car in the republic you just hand in the log book at the local vehicle tax office and pay the VRT and they will issue you with a registration number. Once you have that and insurance for the car you can tax it, later on you can get it through the NCT. If you are moving to Donegal you can legally drive the car on English plates for 6 months and if you have proof that you have owned the car for more than 12mths before moving to Ireland you can import it for free. You can also keep using your British insurance, though you have to inform them that you'll be in Ireland for more than a few weeks, see what they say. There is road tax, insurance (which is more expensive in the Republic). Plus the NCT which is the Irish version of MOT. However, you will also have to pay VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax), because it is listed as a foreign car. This can be extremely expensive. |
