If I buy a foreign registered car (registered in an EU country) do I have to pay import tax? |
If I buy a foreign registered car (registered in an EU country) do I have to pay import tax? No. There is no import duty on goods (including cars) between EU member states. However, you may have to pay VAT (depends on the age of the car, and if VAT has already been paid on the car within the EU). There is a 10% duty on new cars imported from outside the European economic zone (this zone includes some non-EU countries). If the car was manufactured outside this zone, you may have to prove that the duty was paid when it entered the EU (the fact the car was registered in the EU should be proof). I take it when you say the car is registered, you mean it is 2nd hand. If that is the case , then as long as the car is over 6 months old, you can drive it straight through customs without declaring it, and without having to pay any sort of duty. Having said that you may be asked a few questions by immigration, who may in turn hand you to customs, but this will be just to enquire why a British Passport holder is driving a foreign registered car. I'm not quite sure how long you can drive the vehicle in U.K. before registering it here (It may be 6 months). Don't forget you will require insurance and an M.O.T. Certificate to be able to register the vehicle. I hope you realise that an unforeseen expense will be replacing the headlamp units, 'cos the days are long gone when all that was required to change the dip and main beam was an opposite dipping bulb. A good tip here is that when you take the vehicle for test, tell the examiner you intend taking it back to the country of origin within the year. This will give you a little longer to acquire the correct headlamp assembly. Hope this bit is of some help. Happy motoring |
