Sales tax etc on used cars?

I know we have to pay sales tax, title, registration and license plate fees on new cars. But how about used cars? do we pay the same fees? I live in Wisconsin btw.

Paul is right. You will pay use tax on a used vehicle. The DMV will normally accept what the bill of sale says for a purchase price but some states will charge the blue-book value if the numbers look fishy.

If you traded in a vehicle, the value of the trade-in is usually deducted from the price of the new vehicle. That will save you money.

In MO, they give you an even better deal. If you sold a vehicle (or boat!) within 60 days of tagging the new vehicle, they'll deduct whatever you sold the old one for from the price of the new vehicle and tax you on the balance! If you traded DOWN -- NO TAX IS DUE!
I'm not sure about Wisconsin, but here in Ca., you pay what they call "use" tax (same % as sales tax)on whatever $ amount you write down on the forms. Most states have probably joined in.
