If I buy a car from out of state, does the dealer still does the tag, taxes and title? |
or do I have to do that myself? If I have to do it myself, where do I go to do it? It depends on the state. We have no state tax here, and dealers do not take care of any of it. The paperwork is sent to the DMV and the buyer goes there to pay the fees and get the plates. If someone from out of state buys a vehicle, the paperwork is sent to the DMV in their state and they go buy the plates there. On a purchase, the sales tax is usually paid at the time the plates are obtained. If a lease, the tax is usually included in the monthly payment. They do it according to where your from. just like some dealers charge the sales tax for where your from. yes, and they also will charge not only the sales tax from the state your buying the in but also the state tax that the car will be tagged at as well. No, you are responsible for taxes and title. However, you pay the sales tax from which you purchased the car. If they don't have sales tax or it is lower, you will pay less than if you bought the vehicle local. If you buy from a dealership they may include taxes into the sales price. Either way the taxes are paid to the state from which the vehicle came. Licensing and title are payed to the state where the vehicle will be residing. If you buy from a private owner just get a bill of sale written up. It's normal for the bill of sale to say you bought the car for much less, so you pay less taxes. Have the seller sign the title over to you. Take the bill of sale and title to the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) in which you live. You may also need an emissions report. They will then charge you for taxes and licensing. (based on price you payed) Richard W is right. Of course if you are paying cash the dealer usually is not including ttt. I have been in the car business in two states/18 years! |
