With an influx of cars with foreign number plate in my area do they hav to have an mot certificate and tax dis |
there are a lot of cars with eu number plates do they have to be registered here and if you had an accident with one of them would your insurence be able to deal with foreign policies they may hav You will find that most will not have insurance, let alone MOT and tax. They cannot buy tax as the vehicles are not UK registered, this is an EU wide issue! According to EU law, cars may be moved around the EU without being registered for up to 6 months, however, by taking a foreign plated vehicle on the Dover-Calais ferry to France the day before the 6 month ends, re-starts the 6 months! For those vehicles that are correctly covered by insurance from the country in which the vehicle is registered, will not be a problem, as the accident report statements will be in several languages, you should receive one with each new policy you take out, its a blue form. A vehicle can only be insured in the country where it is registered, and tax should be also paid in the country that the vehicle is registered. the anomaly is that most EU wide insurance policy only give cover for 90 days outside the country in which they are insured! There is talk in Brussells that the need to change registrations of vehicles from other contries will be abandoned next year, but until then the vehicles should be re-registered if they are going to stay in the new country. Spain only allows 3 months, so is technically in breach of EU laws, but makes vehicles keep within the boundaries of their insurance policies, its a huge minefield and a long standing arguement over here in Spain with foreign plated cars, the Uk is not alone on this one if you have a car look on the back of a new mot cirtificate the phone number is there to ring, with the new style vosa mot ticket dvla and vosa can tell at a glance at their computors which ones are illegal this is how you can tax a car on line, you really do not need the paper ticket any more, years in the motor trade The answer to your question as far as my car is concernd its Spanish and yes it has to have an mot (a small rectangular sticker showing the date ot ITV which is equivalent )after 4years old pay tax and fully comprehensive for EU countries including most of eastern europe as well all documents must be in the car at all times . As for being able to deal with foreign policies not a problem for example most companies are world wide Linea directa = Direct line . the truth worth 10 points thanks they don't. like France has no road disc either but they can drive on our roads, |
