Do I pay sales tax when purchasing a car from a private seller? |
How much should I try to lower the price on a used 2003 Acura 3.2TL TypeS? And do I have to pay sales tax on the purchase? What if the seller insists that I pay the tax, does that mean he's not being honest with me? You don't pay the seller the tax, but of course you have to pay it. Otherwise, everyone would buy cars from private sellers if the tax was free! You have to pay it to the registry when you inform them of the new purchase. If you give it to him, you're just throwing money away, because he isn't the government, or a business, so shouldnt be collecting taxes. lol. . . .Also, as far as lowering the price, it depends what he is asking, what book value is, and what you've seen other similar cars priced at. When people sell cars, they make it clear right away if they are willing to take a best offer, bargain, or just take only the asking price. Most people are usually willing to go down about $1,000 or so, unless they are desperate and need to sell quickly. That doesn't happen too often, but it can, and then you'll see people just taking the first offer they get that is somewhat reasonable. Do some research, and make a good deal and don't try to rip the seller off. yes ya do.... Ask for a receipt for the tax you paid. It shuld bear the sellr's tax registration number, tax paid, details of purchase and a stamp or seal of the seller. Then you are free of tension, dear! nooooo u dont pay sales becuz the city doesnt know that hes saleing his car. if he tells u 2 pay sales tax walk away!!! You pay the tax at the DMV or tag agency when you register the vehicle. You NEVER pay the tax to a private seller! you pay tax on it when you register it. your best bet is to fudge the sale price to a reasonable number this way you dont get to hurt by big brothers greedy hand. |
