Is there a time limit on how long a credit agency can keep chasing an old debt they feel is owed to them? 6 years with no contact from either party and the debt is written off. lign="right" > Sign in to vote! I was told 7 years. Might be different in different states. lign="right" > Sign in to vote! 7 years...but if they sell the debt to another company, they may be able to keep reporting the outstanding debt on your credit report. If many years have passed on your debt, dispute it for free online with all three major credit bureaus. Equifax, Experian, Transunion. What the credit bureaus do then is verify the debt with the issuing agency...if they can verify the debt with actual paper proof, then you're out of luck. But, more often then not, for many reasons, the debt goes unverified...and guess what...you then have the right to have it removed from your report. Usually, they do that automatically.
