Why do we get child tax credits? (in the USA)? |
If you are on welfare, don't you get more money for the more children you claim? Aren't we encouraging larger families, many headed by single parents who cannot afford to adequately provide for their children? ... and most importantly, and the reason why I'm posting this question in the 'Environment' forum, ... aren't we encouraging planet over-population!? Just how much more stress can we put on our environment and our planet's natural resources? If you increase tax credits and welfare payments for more children, then indeed people will have more children. It's difficult to measure how large this effect is because people say that they have kids because they love kids, not because they want more money. (And even I am not cynical enough to believe that the ONLY reason people have more kids is to get more money.) However, we do have at least one major clue as to how important a factor money is. In surveys, Americans describe the ideal number of children as 3. So if people had more money (whether from tax deductions, welfare payments, or other sources), they would probably have 3 kids, whereas now the average is much closer to 2 than to 3. (The U.S. birth rate actually dropped below 2 for awhile around the late 1970s, but has been rising since then and is now back above 2.0.) As for your final question -- "how much more stres can we put on ... our planet?", the answer is that we are already putting far too much. A recent report said that worldwide, it would take about 1 1/3 earths to produce the resources necessary for the current population. (And that is an under-estimate. Obviously, for non-renewable resources such as oil, copper, etc., it would take an "infinite" number of earths to supply the amount of resources we consume.) As population continues to rise, and as per-capita consumption goes up, the problem will get worse. We should phase out the tax subsidies that encourage higher birth rates. Unfortunately, because most people have children, politicians try to get more votes by increasing those subsidies, not decreasing them. Increasing access to contraceptives would help, since 50% of births in the U.S. are unintended. (In some cases, families just want to delay the births, not prevent them, so increasing contraceptives will not result in a full 50% decrease in births.) Reducing immigration would also help the U.S., as long as we didn't increase the birth rate or per-capita consumption. Currently, our political leaders want to increase the birth rate, increase immigration (to drive down wages), and increase consumption. So the politicians are doing everything they can to reduce sustainability, not increase it. Um, if it weren't for the illegal immigrants climbing over the fence to get here, the US would be DE-populating...they're closing schools all over the place where I live, and I have LOTS of unemployed teacher-friends. So what are you talking about?? But what bothers me is that people applying for tax credits or welfare have been known to put other people's kids on their forms!! THAT is terrible. I do not think that child tax credits encourage over-population. The reason behind them is to help defray the cost of raising a child. I do not recall hearing that there is a problem of families of ten or twelve children in the USA you have to understand that in the u.s. politics are more important than people. because of this we americans pay a lot more money than we should pay . sometimes a person needs a little help but in the u.s. a little help can often evolve into a lifetime of being on the Doll. the politicians need to address this problem closely but that will happen when i hit the lottery. You only get the child tax credit on two children. So having five children won't help increase your amount of tax credit. And you've got the whole welfare thing wrong....if you're on welfare, then you don't make enough money to claim the child tax credit. Claiming the child tax credit doesn't give you money, it only reduces the amount of tax you owe. If you are on welfare, then you're taxable income is low enough to not owe any taxes, therefore you have no benefit from claiming the credit. Perhaps you're referring to the Earned Income Tax Credit? If so, that credit only allows you to use 2 children also, and it helps single people without children. |
