My boyfriend and I share a home and a child. Who should claim head of household to maximize tax returns? |
He made 15x more money than I did last year.(I dont know if that matters) Can we both be head of household since we are not married? Only one of you can claim HOH, usually the person with the higher income qualifies as Generally, you may claim head of household filing status on your tax return only if you are unmarried and pay more than 50% of the costs of keeping up a home for yourself and your dependent(s) or other qualifying individuals. Source(s): Internal Revenue Service 1-800-829-1040 tax return ask for address so you would not be able to both claim head of household and i believe you have to have a child to claim head of house hold. If the child belongs to both of you either one can claim the child. The same person who claims the child does not have to be the one to claim earned income credit. so you really need to do your taxes. several ways to find out which would benfit you. So he could the child and head of household and you single and earned income credit or vs vs. or he can claim child and earned income credit, and you just claim yourself. The earned income credit is where your going to get the best results so see who it benifits. If he doesn't qualify for it even with the child maybe better to go another way. Only one of you can be head of household. Figure your taxes both ways (with you claiming the child, then with him claiming the child).Be sure to check for EIC (earned income credit) and see if you qualify for that. Then, file your taxes whichever way gets the largest refund. Some people reimburse their partner for the amount they would have received had the other person claimed the child. |
