How do I amend my Canadian 2006 taxes for child care expenses and adjust universal child care amount? |
I was dyslexic and didn't catch it until after I e-filed my claim on the universal tax credit and put in $900 instead of $600. And then I sent the child care receipts for my husband to claim with his taxes but he thought I had claimed them so he didn't claim them either. Now I need to amend but don't know what the process is. Can anyone help? Thanks. Hi Michelle, it is the spouse with the LOWER NET INCOME that must report the UCCB payments on line 117 and is also eligible to make the child care expenses on line 214. If you reported the UCCB for an incorrect amount, or it has been reported on the wrong spouse's return, CRA will automatically make the necessary changes prior to completing both of your 2006 Notices of Assessments. If you omitted the child care claims from your 2006 income tax return, you need to complete both the T778 and the T1ADJUSTMENT FORM and attach the day care receipts you wish to claim. You won't be able to adjust your 2006 tax returns until both returns are assessed. I hope this information helps you. Get a new tax form, fill it out properly, send it in with a note attached explaining that this is an amended form and explain why you are doing it. This happens all the time Keep a copy of the form and note. Any post office has tax forms this time of year. okay what you need to is write Rev Can a letter indicating the mistake....for the child care expenses, the person with the lowest income is the only one who can claim...in your letter to Rev Can also explain about the child care expenses...provide a T778 with the letter, a copy of the reciepts, and any other info required for the form...secondly you have to request that Rev Can to make the adjustment as they will not do it unless it is writing...be sure to be clear in your request.... You need to file a T1ADJ. The spouse that earns the lower amount claims the childcare and reports the UCCB. Canadianblondie has the right (and simple) answer. Print off a T1ADJ form for 2006 from your QuickTax package and enter the correct amounts on the line numbers for the UCCB and child care benefits. You must wait until you receive a Notice of Assessment on your original return before you file the T1ADJ. |
