When do you claim your child on your taxes?



Do you wait to file EIC a year after the baby is born or do you file now. My baby will be due the end of April and Ive heard conflicting facts about this. Please help me clear this up.

If your baby is born Jan 1- Dec 31, 2006, then you claim the baby on your 2006 taxes. If your baby is born in 2007, then you claim it on your 2007 taxes.

You can not claim an unborn child. In order to claim a person they need a SSN and an unborn child can not have a SSN
You can not claim your child until it is born. If your due date is next year you can not claim it until next years taxes.
The year they were born, even if it's 11:59pm on December 31. And claiming your child on your taxes is different than using them on your EIC form. Although you would use them on both forms.
You can only claim a dependent after the birth. The IRS does not consider an unborn baby to be a person.
I am taking a tax class and you can't claim a child til it is born and you have a SSN for that child. you can claim it on your 2007 taxes
