Claiming child of unmarried parents on taxes?

My ex-boyfriend and I have a 2 year old son. I claimed him for taxes because he lives with me. While I was helping my ex prepare his taxes, he told me he thinks he's getting screwed....he pays me child support payments and I also get the big tax refund because I claim my son. I think he's being unreasonable. I'm not trying to "screw" anyone! But he DOES owe child support since our son lives with me, and I would naturally claim him on taxes! What's wrong with that?

Is he being anal?

Not anal, but he sounds bitter. Ask yourself how much his child support payments contribute to your son's overall support. If it is 1/2 or more, you may want to consider letting him claim your son every other year or more just to be fair. But the decision is yours. The custodial parent always gets the exemption unless they choose to give it to the other parent or there is a court order forcing them to.
