If i have a child and she turns 18 do i get to count her on my taxes even if i payed child support half a year |
If i have a child and she turns 18 do i get to count her on my taxes even if i payed child support half a year depends upon how the 18 year old files too... if the 18yr old claims themselves, and both parents try and claim them, ALL of them get audited by the IRS. if you payed support, for half a year; did it add up to more then 50% of that childs living expenses? how many months did that child live with you? those are the questions the IRS will focus on TAX INFO http://www.taxsites.com/index.htm... http://www.divorceinfo.com/taxes.htm... http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc354.html... http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc422.html... http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq4-5.html... http://www.irs.gov/localcontacts/index.h... http://www.irs.gov/advocate/index.html... http://www.irs.gov/publications/p525/ind... http://www.fms.treas.gov/faq/offsets_chi... if she has been supported by you for more than half the year and if she worked and filed her taxes she does not claim herself, then sure....you can do so. also if she was still a student even if she worked part time, you can also claim her. just make sure that when she files her own taxes (that is if she needs to), see to it that she does not claim herself as you will claim her. you can claim anyone as long as you paid more than half their sustenance during the year....just enter their names as your foster child. You can claim her up until she is 23 BUT ONLY if she is currently in school. |
