Can the head of te household file taxes for an 18- year old child? |
18- year old has no identification card at the moment. The short answer is yes, but age is not the only requirement. A qualifying child must be under 19, must live with the taxpayer for more than 6 months, be a descendant of the taxpayer or the taxpayer's brother or sister, and NOT provide more than 50% of his/her own support. The child can only be a dependent of one taxpayer or one taxpayer + spouse. The child MUST have a Social Security number. You can still be Head of Household if you have a Qualifying dependent, not your own child. As long as the person you are claiming as a dependent lived with you for the entire year, earned less than $3300, provided less than 50% of his/her own support. The dependent MUST have a Social Security number and can be a dependent of only one taxpayer or taxpayer + spouse. A child with taxable income has to file their own return. An ID card is not needed, though a SSN is. |
