Father living in Florida, children attending college in NC, how to file tax returns? |
Father was a resident in NC, where two kids started attending college. Father at the begining of 2006 year moved to Florida to find work. Kids still attending college in NC. How to best file tax returns in order to maintain children's instate residency for financial aid purposes? The father's move should have no effect on the kids' residency status for college financial aid. If North Carolina has state income tax, and the father had **any** income in North Carolina in 2006, he will most likely still need to file an NC state income tax return. Details should be on the NC state government's website. Source(s): Experience. I moved from Montana to Washington in 2002. MT has state income tax; WA doesn't. But in 2003, I still had to file an MT state income tax return for what I earned in 2002 while still living in Montana. I'm assuming that the kids are still in NC, right? The father moving won't have any affect on them at all. The father just needs to file a Federal return now since FL has no income tax. Is the mother still in NC? If so, the kids' in-state residency status for college shouldn't be affected. If both parents are out of state, and the kids are not considered to be independent of their parents, then their status would probably be affected. Not what you want to hear, I'm sure. |
