How much money can I give to my children as a one time gift free of taxes? |
How much money can I give to my children as a one time gift free of taxes? For 2005 you could give each individual $11,000 in cash and it would not be taxable by the recipient. For 2006 the limit is $12,000. Any amount you use out of your lifetime gift tax exclusion counts against the estate tax exclusion, which is $1,500,000 (for 2004 and 2005). This means that if you use $250,000 of the limit by making gifts during your lifetime, you have reduced by $250,000 the amount that can pass through your estate free of the estate tax. Source(s): http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/arti... IRS Publication 950 $10.00 - maybe. :-) $MONEY$ If you are particularly generous, you can give $1 million tax free. This would use up your entire lifetime gift tax exclusion. Otherwise, you can give up to $11,000 (in 2005) or $12,000 (in 2006) per recipient and not use up even a single penny of your maximum lifetime gift tax exclusion. If you are married, you and your spouse can each separately give $12,000 (in 2006) per recipient (... so that's $24,000...) without any gift tax consequences.
