Could we sue the government..for excess taxes charged from cigarettes? |
if we are all part of the eu ..is the government breaking the law by taxing us too much....eg the banks are now having to pay back the money for the over inflated bank charges...could the government also be made to pay back all the money ive been charged over the years in excess tax from cigarettes.. much more than 60% tax... I hope so, I'll be rich. I live in the US and I'm a non-smoker, but I don't think taxation on cigarettes is a bad idea. It's bad for everyone's health and if it gets to a point where people can't afford them, perhaps they will be forced to look into quitting. you start the proceedings and i will back you up 100 o/o Maybe I should sue you and all your friends for exposing me to second hand smoke! Might want to check your laws, but in the United States, we can't sue the government. Its called governmental immunity. I live in California and we recently had a vote on whether or not to add a new tax to cigarettes. I voted yes. I have nothing against smokers. In fact I think it might be a little excessive on this new fad on banning smoking in public areas. However, I read the proposed bill and the money accrued from the new tax revenue was going to be spent in the best manner possible...to pay for the medical care many cancer patients benefit from...and it wasn't going to the insurance industry but to fund new research, help doctors pay off their ridiculous loans...which would consequently deter potential med students from accepting help from big pharmaceutical companies looking to buy their soul. There were countless other great things to be done with that money but people are inherently selfish and unfortunately smokers outnumbered non-smokers. Next time they want a bigger voter turn out they should just put a cigarette tax bill on their. Like marijuana, coke, heroine and LSD, nicotine is a drug. A highly addictive drug. But unlike nicotine or beer those other drugs can't be taxed due to an overzealous campaign by Hearst and DuPont. The ironic thing is that it is legal because it can be taxed. The way I feel about it is whenever other people who wish to do illegal narcotics they have to pay a substantial fee...sometimes those prices go up when there is a drug or something and I imagine heroine addicts don't just wait til the prices go down....they pay the added tax. If you want to smoke why can't smokers accept that as the nature of the game. Also...do you know who funds all those anti cigarette tax bills...the tobacco companies. Who send me...a girl who's had one cigarette when I was 15 and couldn't even inhale...expensive marketing material every week. Send me purses, cigarette cases, ashtrays...and countless coupons for free cigarettes. I tell you I can't think of any other industry be it public or private that goes to such great lengths to gain my business. I am in no way anti-smoker...I say everyone do what they want...live and be happy. Just don't drink and drive. You should maybe think about getting the tobacco industry to pay the taxes you don't want to. It's not like they don't have the extra cash. |
