My credit card company (Citibank) is refusing to cancell my credit line. What can I do?

It doesn't make any sense. I am a "deadbeat" to them, and I have a 0 credit balance. I have reported them to the bbb, and I have called, sent certified mail, and emailed them regarding the situation and it has yet to be cancelled. They added (without my consent) a 10.00 a month charge to my credit card and when I tried to cancell that I berated and made to feel like an idiot. DO NOT EVERY USE THEIR CREDIT SERVICES, YOU WILL REGRET IT! Please tell me, other than having an attorney settle this, is there anything I can do to stop this madness?

WOW! I don't even know where to start!

But I'll try:

1. If you didn't want to keep the card, you should not have activated the new one. By doing that, you want to keep it.

2. They do not add that Identity Protection unless you agree to it in writing.

3. If they (probably the outsourced cancellation center in India) wouldn't let you cancel it, you should have talked to a supervisor.

I had their card for a number of years and I was very pleased.
Call and demand to speak to a supervisor.
Pay off their balance and they will cancel the card. As long as you owe them money they are not going to write it off.
Wow! I've been a Citibank credit card holder for over 20 years, and they've never done anything but be of great service to me. I'm really surprised by their treatment of you.

I recommend calling Clark Howard, a radio consumer advocate for help. Go to www.clarkhoward.com to find out how and when.
YOUR STATE ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE...
AND ALSO BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU......

FILE COMPAINTS AND DOCUMENT ALL ABOVE YOU STATED..
What was the $10 a month for? For holding the credit line open?

Call them back and CALMLY (yeah, I know it's hard when you're mad but you'll get further being sickeningly polite) ask the to remove the charge as you have already requested that the credit line be closed. If you can't get anywhere with whoever you talk to, ask for their supervisor.

Stay calm. Stay polite. Be as sweet and nice as you can (under the circumstances).

Unless you signed some sort of long term agreement with them that you were going to keep this thing open for some set period of time, I don't see how they can keep it open if you don't want it.
Call them on the phone and talk to someone. Get the name! If you cannot get resolution, demand to speak with a supervisor. The bank is required by law to acknowledge your letter complaint within 30 days, and resolve the matter promptly, and the Feds will come down on them if they don't. If that still does not work, you have little choice to write to all three of the credit agencies and explain the situation. If you have a lawyer friend, perhaps he can be persuaded to send them a nasty letter, threatening dire consequences if they don't clean up their act.
