Do you know of any help with paying off college loans? |
I went to college and graduated with a degree in elementary education. I am a single mom. My loan payments are way out of my financial range, and they are as low as they can be. Does anyone know of any grants or ways I can get help paying my loans off? My next step is to get a 2nd job, and I will hardly ever be able to see my son. Thanks! Consolidate if you haven't already and check to see if you can get a different payment plan. Depending on how much you borrowed/owe you may be able to stretch the payment out and have lower monthly payment. Here's a link to different loan forgiveness programs http://www.finaid.org/loans/forgiveness.... Depending on what state you live in, the state may help you out if there's a severe teacher shortage in that state. I know in Missouri the state will come in and forgive a significant amount of your loans after a certain period of time if you stay employed at the same school. You should also try talking to the direct loans people and attempt to declare financial hardship and see if they can postpone payments on your loans until you're better able to pay them. Talk to your lender. If you can prove severe financial distress, you may be able to put them into forebearance which puts the payments on hold for a while. This may give you a little breathing room to save up a little money and to deal with other bills you may have. Trust me, your lender does not want these to go into default. It does cost them to take you to court but if things get to that point, they could end up garnishing your wages. Do you belong to a teacher's union? They may have a program to help you. Check with the NEA as well. two words GET JOB. See if you can put your loans in forbearance until you get better established in your career. If you are looking for another job, one that is flexible, consider this: I started my own business when I was in school through BeautiControl. The Spa parties are really fun and relaxing and you really get out of it what you put into it. You decide your own schedule, how much or little you work, you have a lot of flexibility. Plus you also determine how much you can make and how much you can advance. Let me know if you are interested. Barbie Consultant 1029211 |
