What is the best way for someone without excellent credit to get a student loan for college.? First, apply for Federal Student Aid online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Stafford and Perkins, two of the loans that you might obtain upon filing the FAFSA require NO CREDIT CHECK. Your college Financial Aid administrator will use your FAFSA results to determine your eligibility for these funds. (Federal grant aid [Pell and SEOG] and non-loan Federal self-help aid [such as work-study] are also awarded without regard to a student's credit rating.) Once you have exhausted your options for Federal Aid, look to your school for other types of funding. You would do yourself a disservice if you didn't go to your college for Financial Aid information! Plenty of schools have their own non-credit-based no-interest (or low-interest) loan programs. There are non-federal (called "private" or "alternative") educational loans that you can borrow to supplement your federal aid package. You need to be very careful, because any loan that you can obtain without credit OR a cosigner will probably have a very high interest rate. Borrow conservatively. First, try the first two loans listed below -- if your credit isn't horrible, or if you have a co-signer, you may be approved. If you aren't approved or if you don't have a cosigner, try the latter two loans as a last resort (as the rates tend to be higher).
