Is there anything that caters to adults who want to go back to school college full time? (loans, grants etc)? |
I am really interested in going back to school. It is inevitable, a college education is minimally required for most decent jobs, especially in CA. I work full time. I make $24/hr doing a very tedious and stressful job. I cry almost everyday when it is time to go to work. I can not see myself doing this job too much longer. I am considering quitting and sacrificing the highest paying job I have ever had in order to further my education. (deferred gratification) I just do not know the first thing about how I will finance my education. Unfortunately I have no savings. I am single , no children or major responsiblities. I could relocate if necessary. My goal is to pursue my education FULL time. Can anyone suggest the best route to take for obtaining the information I need. And now, the "stupid question"....Is it necessary that I get a job at all while going to college, or can I live like some students out of high school, off of loans and scholarships? Is cost of living included ? Great news. You can do it. It will be harder than when you were younger but there are numerous things in your favor. 1 Read the book, "What Color Is Your Parachute" Once you decide the direction you want to go then proceed with your education. 2. Find the local CLEP (I think it stands for but not sure...College Level Entrants Proficency) center. Get what ever book they recomend to prepare for the CLEP. It may only cost $50 for 3 credits. It is pass or fail. But you can CLEP out of up to maybe 30 credits. 3. Find where you can get experiencial learning credit for life experience. Challenge what ever you can. 4. Take what ever classes you need. Word of caution, find out which professors are user firendly. For instance, when it came to micro biology, I found one professor was hard to understand and had a high fail rate. I had to drive 30 miles to get the class from a professor that I had a chance to pass. 5. Get the program from your library "College If There's a Will, There's an A" Finally, you can do it. I had a class mate in her 50's. Half of my nursing class was in their 30's and first time in college. Best wishes. If there is any way I can help, contact me through the source reference. The same student loans and grants available to kids right out of high school are available to you, however, with your income and as a single person you will not get as much, you will have to work at least part time. Contact the school your interested in, and they will help you with all the paperwork. I went back to college when I was 24 and it was hard for the first year, I really learned why they say poor college student. My first peice of advice would to become as out of debt as possible. Get rid of your credit cards and car payment, they will just make it harder for you to make ends meet. Student loans are available to you and will be nominal at first, as a freshman you are will be able to get just enough to make tution, but as you work your way through (sophmore, junior, senior) more loan money you will be eligible for. Keep in mind that you must succeed with your class work baecuse your loans, scholarships, and grants are based on your grades and commitment to learing. I would suggest going to the university you wish to attend and find out the required classes that can be offered by your local community college. These colleges are cheaper, offer night classes, and generally the credits transfer easily. Talk to a counselor about the particulars. Once you decide to go to the university then take a full-time class load and dont look back. I may take a few years but the rewards are great. Good luck. P.S.
