Does anybody know anything about those credit counseling companies? are they legitimate? do they charge fees

I personally was in a credit counseling service. There are some out there that are non-profit, however I highly advise not to join. Credit counseling is just as bad as filing for bankruptcy. When people look at your credit, they will see that you are in a credit counseling service and they will know that you are having trouble paying your bills. If you truely can avoid this, I would. However if this is a desperate need - then do it. There is a statistic out there that a certain amount of people who join credit counseling services will actually file bankruptcy within the next two years - look it up.
most of them are not legitimate and yes they charge.
I've heard only good things about such comapnies. Personally I can only speak for Consumer Credit Counselling, but the concept is rather basic. Most are non profit, so there will be a fee (as they have to pay employees and that), but it won't be much at all, compared to what you may expect.

How it works? They work with your income, and you show them where you need money, and figure out after some spending money and that how much you would feasably be able to pay. They then contact all of your creditors and setup a plan of how much goes to each, and then you just give the credit counselling place one payment and the send it all out, probably taking a small amount for their services, but like I say, not much.

EDIT: I am not employed by this company, and since they're non profit it wouldn't matter. For the record I work for a casino in Seattle.
Consumer Credit Counselling got my sister set and cleared all her debt up.

Oh yes they do charge. Best try to work with your creditors yourself. They will be more then happy to help you setup a payment plain that will help you get out of trouble. Just make the payments an you will be ok.
Consumer Credit Counseling is the only I would go to. They worked for us and they don't charge for services. They are awesome. Crown Financial Services is a great resource too.
