What to do: someone uses you as credit reference, then bill collectors hound you for their debts? |
A relative's ex husband (who really detests me/but goes around town telling people how much I like him) used me as a credit reference several times recently. Wasn't any too happy when bill collectors called asking me if I knew the whereabouts of the individual. He ended up getting way more than he bargained for because I found out his phone# and address and the stuff he bought/rented got repoed. I told the repo guy, maybe they should check out customers references better and I didn't want to be bothered again. Don't blame you there! At least he will not be using you as a reference anymore! Tha Bumm!!!! I solved that one easily; I just got an unlisted number and only give it to people I truly trust. Credit refs have to be accompanied by a phone number. If you did not say yes to them then tell them he put you on with out knowalge and you want him to stop That's happened to me before by someone I knew of vaguely. I tell creditor nicely, but firmly that I do not even know the person and do not understand why they used me as a reference. After the second call, I ask to speak to a supervisor (not to get them in trouble, mind you) and have them take me off the phone list--again--because I do not know the person. i do collections at work - we have 5 references per client,i have to call them if i can't reach the client - if someone tells me the situation in a nice way - such as,i don't know him,i don't see him etc - i apologize and remove them from the list. some people are creeps and just hang up on me - and i continue to call, and call, and call - just tell me.common courtesy. good for you in your situation - i bet the collector was lovin you =) my favs are grandmas, landlords and ex's - the most help have a good one - hope you don't get any calls hehe Check to see if there legislation to help when collectors call. Here in Ohio, if they call, you can tell them to put your name on a "DO NOT CALL" list. Then you can report them if they do continue to call/harass you. Or do like you did, and give up thier phone and address, good job! Well looks like you fixed that mate- he won't use you again will he? Relative's ex eh? Why doesn't he bother his own family? |
