1. pull a free credit report from annualcreditreport.com

2. pay the extra $5-10 for your FICO score
3. carefully read the reasons given for your low score

4. find a credit counselor in your area, but don't let them consolidate your credit. Talk to several and shop around to educate yourself. Check out the link.

Credit repair can be done by yourself. Get a copy of your own credit report and see if anything is reported incorrectly. Then you can request them to verify certain item under your report. If they fail to reply in certain time period, they have no choice but to remove the item from your report. This is what credit repair companies do.
