Credit Repair?

Can anyone tell me how I can repair my credit without going through a credit repair service? How long does it usually take for one's credit to be repaired to a decent score? Thanks.

Contact each of the credit reporting agencies, get a copy of the credit report, then go over it carefully. You can dispute anything that you disagree with by calling the reporting agencies, which is all a credit repair agency would do anyway. It costs nothing to dispute, and you can dispute as often as you want. If the creditor does not reply back to the dispute within the timeframe allowed by law, the dispute is decided in your favor.
The dispute process takes up to 30 days each time you dispute. Another thing you can do that may help is contact the creditors yourself; see if there is someone at the company who is willing to "forgive" a late payment or two, and have them contact the reporting agencies.
Some collection agencies may agree to delete collections if you pay them, as part of a settlement agreement. It doesn't hurt to try, and it may result in a higher score.
One thing to remember: the score will only improve over time, as you maintain a good history of paying on time the score will get higher, and if you have mistakes in the past, the older they get the less impact they have.
Good luck - be patient.
Talk to a bankruptcy attorney, they specialize in that kinda stuff. Avoid credit repair services, they are rippoffs.
Just pay everything off first. Then look for a bank in your area that offer the "credit establish" credit card. They're for people who are trying to improve/establish good credit. You probably won't be approved for a regular credit card, so this is your best bet. You have to prove to everyone that you're responsible enough to have a credit card/loan/mortage...etc.. so you have to start somewhere. Usually, the credit card that I'm talking about has requirements, such as a $200 balance that needs to be kept at all times in your checking account (just in case you don't make your payments). It's actually a really good deal though.
Repairing credit can be difficult, but it's extremely important. My grandfather had terrible credit 'cuz of a divorce. To repair it, he got a loan from a bank (with his wife, my grandmother, as a cosigner). He took that money from the loan and put it away (savings account), and every month he would make payments. He said that he did this numerous times. I can't tell you exactly what his credit score is today, but it is very high. Repairing your credit will cost you (cuz of the interest on the loan), but it will save you money in the long run. Good luck!
first thing you need to do is order a credit report. Verify that the info is correct. If there's fraud, you'll see debt that isn't yours and you'll need to correct that.
