Credit repair companies?

does anyone have any facts on these credit repair companies?can they really help to build your score legally?I filed bankruptcy in 2003 and need help getting some items off and build my score.

Credit repair companies are a scam. If you go to the Federal Trade Commissions web site at http://www.ftc.gov they have a bunch of info about it.

Everything that the repair company can do, you can do yourself. It simply involves writing letters and disputing entries on your report.

Note that if the entry is "true and accurate" there may be no legal way to get it removed.

The FTC site also gives you some hints on credit repair. You can also go to http://www.creditboards.com and get more help.

Don't pay some one to do what you can do your self. Go to annualcreditreport.com or go to your bank and ask for help to your free annual credit report, make a list of the accounts you feel are not valid and on the annual credit report web pages you can dispute the entire process takes about 60 days.
What everyone is saying about you being able to do it yourself is right but I tried to do it myself and those collectors are mean and even some of the people at the credit bureaus are just nasty. They made me cry.

So, I used Second Chance Financial. It cost me about $1000, which I made in payments, but in 6 months my score jumped about 80 points and I qualified for a mortgage which I would not have qualified for before.

My thought is that really we can do just about anything ourselves. We can all change our oil, cut our own hair and go get water bottles rather than having it delivered but most of us don't. It's whatever it is worth to you and I am sure there are some scam companies out there but 2nd Chance really did what they said they would for me and I get so happy when I get an updated report in the mail from the credit bureaus.
