Are those credit repair agents legit or are they a rip off? has anyone ever dealt with one? PLEASE SHARE? Sidoney says exactly what I've been telling people for months now! Credit repair agencies are a scam. They charge you to do what you can easily do yourself. The problem is that you are not educated on what to do. You don't know the law! Read the links below. They will detail exactly what you need to do to fix your credit. If you need further help, post again or contact me and I'll give you whatever advice I can. Source(s): http://www.comresinc.org/forms/credit/cl... http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/cred... http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/cred... http://www.cardreport.com/laws/statute-o... http://credit.about.com/cs/creditrepair/... Be careful. Some of them are ripoffs. Go to the legitimate Credit Bureau and ask them for help. Never dealt with one but from what I gather, they pay your bills, and you pay them. That means a high percent which means lower monthly but much longer timeperiod. Also much more aggressive debt collections. Im a mortgage broker and we do a lot of credit repair and financial planning. You want to stay away from "Debt Consolidators" .. You actually look worse to banks and lending institutions when your done To answer your question in a nut shell, some are rip off artist and some do what they are suppose to do. You as a consumer have to do your home work, check the Better Business Bureaus, see if they have a license to operate in your state or city. See if others you know have done business with them like family and friends. Find out if they have a local office as oppose to a national office located in a city far away from where you are. If you want to clean up your credit, you should write to the 3 major credit bureaus and request they send you a copy of your credit report. See if all the information on your credit report is correct, immediately challenge the stuff you do not recognize by sending a letter of explanation to the 3 major bureaus asking them to verify that the information on your credit report as yours. After doing this you should challenge other items on your credit report with the companies listed on your credit report. Send them a letter, their address is listed on your credit report, challenge them as to where they got the item listed, how long they have had it, the original amount of the debt, the original account numbers, how much is left on the debt, if they can not provide this information tell them to remove the item from your credit report immediately. I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck Credit repair companies and debt consolidators are apples/oranges. Credit repair tries to make all your past payment history good and will charge you either all upfront or 1/2 upfront and 1/2 after you're satisfied. I've been working with one recommended by my mortgage broker and they haven't really done s*** that I couldn't have done myself. Having said that, I never tried to do it myself, and don't really have the time so they might be worth it, I'll let you know in another year when it's finally all fixed. Just don't go to one that charges all upfront, you have to be able to dangle a carrot. Debt Consolidators in theory, wonderful, they put all of your debt into their pot and you pay them. What we (the average schmoo) don't know is they have arrangements with all these creditors to pay cents on the dollar so while you're paying them (the DC's) they're paying off your debt for 25 cents for every dollar you owe. They charge you 45 cents and you both seem to be doing ok right? Except for at the SAME TIME, they're BUYING Debt from say XXXXBANK at 4 cents because that institution has written their deadbeats (you & me) off. Then they try to collect for full value from maybe not you, but me... Maybe write me, because I don't know that I'm doing this scam justice. But imagine a big circle jerk, and you be the last one! And everyone has fallen asleep |
