The free ones do have helpful advice and good sample letters to help you get started. I wouldn't trust anything you need to pay for. There's enough good free info out there.

Generally no. Unless you have a sh#t load of money to pay someone to get you some new credit accounts added to your report (maybe $10,000 to do this). Otherwise, all this companies are doing is disputing your collections and hoping the credit bureaus get overwhelmed and miss the deadline for responding (30 to 45 days). Then the credit bureaus must remove the negative credit file (collection) from your credit report. However, you can do this yourself - and you should do this yourself. This is a good learning lesson for you. Dont pay someone to do what you can do for yourself.

Also signup for a credit monitoring service like at Transunion. They have all of the info you need to handle the collections and disputing of your negative credit file(s).

As long as you understand that you are paying for a convenience rather than a skilled service, there should be no problem. Ask around, find the lowest priced ones, then get a letter explaining what you can fully expect from the service and how much it will cost.
