Anybody have any insight with CREDIT REPAIR? |
I have heard so many things about credit repair... I just wondered if you could share what has and has not worked for you...Thanks Credit Repair takes a commitment. It's not something that should be tackled nonchalantly. You need to be committed from the begining in order to successfuly track dates. Send follow ups timely etc. Credit Repair is something you can do on your own. There is not a single company out there that can do anything you can't do on your own. Before tackling it is important that you read and fully understand the FDCPA (fair debt collection practices act), FCRA (fair credit reporting act, FTC (Federal Trade Commision) and the FCBA (fair credit billing act) for starters. Also you will need to read and understand any state laws that may also apply to these areas. Then when you're ready to start you want to get a copy of your credit reports from the 3 major bureaus; Trans Union, Equifax, and Experian. You are entitled to get them free yearly. Just note that if you find errors on them and you choose to dispute them, the credit reporting agencies are allowed to have 45 days rather than the normal 30 to investigate a dispute. Then you want to opt out (opt out of prescreened offers for credit and insurance offers), before starting any credit disputes you want to first correct any incorrect addresses and name variances on your reports. Once that's done then you can comb through your credit reports for errors then dispute accordingly. What I have given you will help you with getting started on your credit repair journey. Just note that if you don't change your habits, get current on accounts, and make a budget before starting repair you're not helping yourself. I wish You luck! All you need is a recent copy of your credit report call the bureaus and dispute the claim. That's all that credit repair agencies do. And if you do it yourself its free. I contracted an agency before learning this an I think I pro bally paid them more than the actual amount that I had in collection and they were not able to remove most of the negative items on my report. Keep it simple! Unless your being sued, handle it yourself. First, educate yourself at the FTC web site. Second, find a simple to use credit repair kit at a local office supply store or on-line. It will have all the form letters you need and simple to follow instructions http://www.ftc.gov http://domsfrontporch.blogspot.com/2006/... I have helped people with resolving credit problems for years and have one of the best success rates of anyone in doing this. I can tell you that it is legal to "repair" your credit. I can also tell you that anyone who says that they can remove everything or that they can do it quickly is lying to you. The normal time frame is a minimum of 45 days and can take several months. I can also tell you that while there is nothing a credit repair company can do for you that you can not do for yourself, it many times makes sense to use a professional if you can find a legitimate one. This is because they do this all the time and thus do not have to spend a lot of time researching information. It is not as simple as just disputing items on your credit report for most people. Many times you have to get into additional laws and court decisions that most people are not willing to spend time researching. My advice on how to select professional help is very simple. Ask a number of mortgage brokers to see if they have a recommendation. I would not pay any credit repair company that doesn't rely on word of mouth for their business. Most of the time mortgage brokers in the area will have heard and seen the succesful results of a credit repair company in your area if there are any. Most of the companies that say they do credit repair are not very succesful or are a scam, so they are regulated under the Credit Repair Organizations Act. |
