if there is a genuine mistake on your credit file (rather than something you just want removing because it is old etc) then approach experian and equifax. You will need to tell them (you can file the query online now) what you think is incorrect and they will take it from there.

Don't waste your money with a credit repair company. Very little can be done about entries which are correct, but you just don't want on there. Correct entries will stay there for 6 years.

Yes, there is 3 credit reporting companies where you need to contact and get a copy of your credit report and if you find a descrepency you can contest it and request it to be removed, the credit companies will do a credit investigation and report to you the outcome, if it is favorable they will remove the bad credit reporting. You are entitled to one free credit report a year according to a new law
Yes you can. The first step you should take is contact the company affiliated with the wrong information. My experience has been that dealing directly with the involved company over wrong information is easier than dealing with the three major CRA's.

Write the company a letter explaining the situation then send it certified. They will usually respond within a week or two, then give them 30 days to correct it.

If they refuse to correct the information, the Fair Credit Reporting Act entitles you to file a statement with the 3 major CRA's that will be attached to the reporting of that particular debt.

Remember this though, there are no laws in effect yet that require one CRA to report information to the other 2. So you must contact all 3 with the same information.
