Can someone use your Visa credit/debit card after you reported it lost?

My husband and I went on a trip last week and we returned late late Friday night/ very early Saturday morning. We found out later Saturday morning that my husband had lost his Visa Debit/Credit card. We called ASAP and the last place it was used at was a gas station late Friday night (where he lost it).
Now we had plenty in checking and some in savings and at our bank if you go over at all in checking, they automaticly transfer some from savings to checking. I went about an hour ago to check the account and realized we were over by a good bit and our savings is completely emptied.
Can someone use the card as credit even after it has been reported as lost????

You better call your bank IMMEDIATELY. Unfortunately, what likely happened was that the money was taken out before you reported it lost.

In that case, you are in one hell of a jam.

What you are saying doesn't really make sense. The card company is telling you the last place it was used was a transaction that you can recall?? If that is the case my dear

you and your husband went way overboard on your spending.
If your bank does not block the card immediately, they can use your credit/debit card. From http://cc9.info
no its cancelled after u report it but who ever got it after u lost it went right then and used it. most charges takes days to post.
No. Once its been reported, they block that card from being used again.
Theoretically, no, but small charges could slip by if the store doesn't verify the card. They'd normally verify any large charges.

But talk to the bank that issued the card. Did you formally report it lost? Most of the time, you have to do it in writing.

There are laws protecting you though, from losing more than $50 as long as you report it in a timely manner.

Good luck.
If you reported it immediately, all funds should have been frozen from that card. However, if it was Friday night when you called, it could have been today - the next business day - that this problem was actually keyed in. Too, someone would have to have had your passcode (was it with the card?) to get money from a debit machine, how could they empty the accounts of all cash?

8:33 p.m. been eating at my craw....stuck in the back of my mind.

No known transaction since Friday night, then how could all the money disappear and there not be a transaction to show it? Too, there is a daily limit on a debit card. Odd IMO
Yes sir, someone can in fact use your card after it has been reported stolen or lost. The real question is what are you liable for?

Typically, at most $50 is your liability after you report the card lost. Before you report the card lost, well, that's a different matter.

Here's a story from personal experience.
Brother in law swears he lost his wallet somewhere between 7-11 and home. Calls the credit card companies right away. They take the report, and issue new cards.
Over the next few days, card is used plenty of times, for a bunch of catalog and on-line orders. (none of which brother in law is responsible for, since he had reported the card lost)
Then about a week later, we move the dresser before painting the bedroom, and Lo-and-behold! there's the wallet he lost.
Seems the person taking the lost card call is sharing the credit card numbers with friends.

Enjoy!
