How long do negative occurences stay on your credit report? |
I mismanaged my finances back in 2001 and 2002. Now I'm fine. But I applied to a job that did a check on my credit report and they said there were some "negative things" on it so I was disqualified for the job. They stay on your credit report for 7 years. ALWAYS do a check on your credit report--it's free (by law) and is available for you to view once a year. It's always good to look through it and contest what the negatives are, if possible. Also remember that too MANY accounts open are going to be negative as well. Yep, Seven years. Been there and done that twice. depending on what account you have your negative ma on it could stay there for as long as 7 or ten years..before it falls off. Why did you let them check your credit? You know that went on your credit report? Negative occurences used to last up to seven years but now if it's something you didn't pay they just keep updating it and it'll last forever so you might as well pay it. up to 7 years after its paid in full It is intresting that an employer turned you down because of bad credit. Any way, depending on the laws of your state, the negative stuff usually stays with you for about 7 years. If you got it all paid it should show that too. If not, then that is why you still have bad credit. According to the 2007 edition of the Consumer Action Handbook published by our Government; Accounts 7-years from the date of first delinquency. Bankruptcy 10-years chapter 7, 7-years chapter 13. Judgments 7-years or until the S.O.L. runs out. Tax liens 15-years. Inquiries 2-years. |
