I was wondering how long unpaid bills stay on your credit report/file?

I have numerous unpaid medical bills from 4 or 5 years ago, and wondered if goes off your credit report after certain amount of time. And if so, do they go back to original charge date, or last payment date? I've been told I need to file bankruptcy because of my credit status.

Paying 5 year collection accounts will do nothing except lower your score. After seven years they fall off. However, a lot of times these collections are sold from company to another. Theoretically they can keep opening new collection accounts on your credit report.

The clock starts ticking from the "date of last activity". If you make a payment to the creditor it starts the clock all over again including the statute of limitations where they can sue you. Source(s): 6 years mortgage banking
5 years auto finance
7 years for bill and 11 for bankruptcy
i think its 10 years , www.coldmicefeet.com
they will stay for 7 years.
I know that a bankruptcy will stay on your credit for approx. 7 to 10 years. However, if you don't file bankruptcy, I'm not sure they ever have an obligation to take it off of your credit report.
about 7 years, and mike vick gets 12-18 months, what a country!
