For a credit card to be positive on my report do I need to use it & pay the balance off or just activate it? If it is a capital one credit card you receive 3 positive credit reference per month and 36 a year.. Use your card, make your payments on time, don't go over your limit and keep the account up.. three things that are reported to the credit agencies are longevity of the account *how long it has been open* your balance and payment history. Use it and pay off the balance use it, pay off the balance, and you probably won't see a good mark on your credit report for about 6 months to a year.
