What's up with these credit reporting agencies?

Is it just me, or is trying to get a credit report WAY too difficult nowadays? There are way too many websites affiliated with one of the 3 bureaus, but you can't tell which one, and they want to charge you for EVERYTHING. It almost seems like the bureaus are deliberately trying to hide something or scam people out of more money. All I want to do is order one report from each bureau, but it seems like its either going to cost too much to do that, or that they are trying to sell me a bunch of other things I don't want, and the website will not allow you to continue to JUST GET A CREDIT REPORT unless you buy something else. Am I the only one having this problem? Why hasn't anyone done anything about this racket?

The government made it possible for anyone in the USA to get their credit report for free.

But many will try to get you to pay for your score or identity theft monitoring etc while you are there. You do not need to buy those products and you should get your report every four months from a different company. Each will only let you get it for free once a year so going to a different one every 4 months covers you for the year.
By law each major credit reporting agengy has to give you one copy of your credit report every year. You must wtire to them or go online to ask for it. It will not have your actual credit score on it but it will show you everything that has been reported.
Try www.annualcreditreport.com (or call 877-322-8228.) This one is supposed to be ok, and give you a free annual credit report from all 3 bureaus. It's been a while since I checked mine, but I don't remember having any problems.
go to myfico.com

get each report and score...

and you can find coupon codes on the net to lower teh price per report to like $9 each.

you are also entitled to one free report each year- plus an updated one whenever you dispute something!

here is a link to the federal government's federal trade commision, they have recommendations on how to protect yourself, you are right to be suspicious there are many websites that look legit but will either charge you to see your report or steal your information

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/cr...

check out the article on protecting yourself.

the one and only site they endorse is

annualcreditreport.com

all others are "use at your own risk" although some are legit, I would stick with the one recommended by the FTC

just another note, you are entitled to a free credit report, but this does not include your credit score, there are many ways to see your score but they all cost money.

also, before you do this, make sure you have plenty of ink and paper for your printer, you are only entitled to 1 free report per year, so you will probably want to print them out, and they can be pretty long (i think mine were as long as 20 pages, and there are 3 separate reports)
I've retrieved my credit reports through this site safely
